Breves datos biográficos
Ray Benson, nacido el 16 de marzo de 1951 en Pennsylvania, es el lider de la banda Asleep at the Wheel, grupo especializado en Western Swing, Honky tonk y Boogie Woogie. La banda fue formada por Benson y sus amigos Lucky Oceans y Leroy Preston y a partir de 1973, hicieron de Austin, en Texas, su hogar.
La banda ha ganado 9 premios Grammy y Benson, además de ser el vocalista líder, ha oficiado de productor para artistas como los Texas Tornados, Dale Watson, Suzy Bogguss, Aaron Watson, James Hand, Willie Nelson, Aaron Neville, Brad Paisley, Pam Tillis, Trace Adkins, Merle Haggard y Vince Gill, entre muchos otros. Es además miembro fundador de Rhythm and Blues Foundation, que reúne dinero para veteranos artistas de blues y está en la directiva de la fundación SIMS Foundation, que ofrece servicios de asistencia psicológica a bajo precio para músicos de Austin y sus familias, entre otras tantas tareas samaritanas.
Entre numerosos premios ganados, Ray Benson ha sido incluido en el Salón de la Fama de la Música de Austin (Austin Music Hall of Fame) en 2002 y recibió The Texas Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award en 1996.

1 AMCU - Ya que el Western Swing es una combinación de Música Country y Jazz, cómo ha recibido el público de Jazz a su música a través de los años?

Ray Benson - En su mayoría, el public de jazz nos ha ignorado. Ahora personas que son abiertas de mente y que fanáticos del jazz nos aman! Son las mismas 12 notas y los mismos ritmos y los solos son justo como en la tradición de improvisar del jazz! Yo nos llamo Count Basie con sombrero de vaquero!

2 AMCU - Tendencias, modas y nombres van y vienen: Countrypolitan, Outlaws, Nashville Pop, Neotradicionalistmo, etc. Sin embargo, Asleep at the Wheel se ha mantenido verdadera a su música. ¿Hay algunos planes de cambio en el futuro? ¿Alguna vez sintió la necesidad de cambiar el estilo del grupo para vender más discos?

Ray Benson - No tenemos razón para cambiar. Ahora yo también tengo un álbum solista que saldrá al mercado, que explora otros estilos de música que yo escribo pero Asleep at the Wheel hará siempre lo que hacemos!

3 AMCU - ¿Hay algunos nuevos compositores de Western Swing hoy en día? ¿Por qué siempre van al pasado para grabar viejos clásicos de vez en cuando?

Ray Benson - Sí, hay muchos Buenos compositors, incluyendo a mí mismo, espero, pero parte de AATW ha sido siempre revivir las viejas canciones!

4 AMCU - ¿Qué música escucha a menudo?

Ray Benson - Yo generalmente escucho a nuevos grupos y cantantes qu m envian sus canciones así como a grupos que me interesan a mí. Navego por YouTube en busca de viejas y nuevas cosas. Tengo 5000 discos de 78 rpm en los que me sumerjo también!

5 AMCU - ¿Cuántos músicos ha tenido Asleet at the Wheel a lo largo de los años? ¿Cómo recluta a sus miembros de la banda?

Ray Benson - Hemos tenido alrededor de 100! Siempre estoy en la búsqueda de músicos talentosos! Cuando se abre un espacio, sólo convoco! Acabamos de contratar a un segundo violinista y a una vocalista femenina para los próximos años ya que nuestra actual vocalista femenina está partiendo.

6 AMCU - Varios miembros de su banda se han convertido en protagonistas significativos en la banda, por ejemplo, Jason Roberts y Elizabeth McQueen. ¿Le pidieron ellos tomar ese rol más importante o usted les pidió eso?

Ray Benson - Yo les pedí.

7 AMCU - Luego de haber grabado dos álbumes tributo con muchos de los mayores nombres en la Música Country, hay algún otro artista con quien le gustaría grabar un dúo?

Ray Benson - Bueno, estamos trabajando en un Nuevo CD tribute a Bob Wills que saldrá a fines del año que viene! Me ENCANTARÍA cantar con Tony Bennett!!

8 AMCU - ¿Cómo se sintió la primera vez que conoció a Bob Wills?

Ray Benson - Anonadado!

9 AMCU - Bob Wills ha sido una tremenda fuerza en la música norteamericana. Sin embargo, mucha gente no conoce mucho sobre él. ¿Piensa que su música ha ayudado a formar nuevos fans de Bob Wills?

Ray Benson - Por supuesto! Hemos traído el Western Swing y la música de Bob Wills a 3 o 4 generacions de gente a través de nuestros CDs de tributo y con nuestra obra “A Ride With Bob”!

10 AMCU - A pesar de que ya había grabado con Willie Nelson, les llevó mucho tiempo antes de que grabaran el impresionante album "Willie & The Wheel". ¿Cómo fue trabajar con él?

Ray Benson - Trabajar con Willie es siempre genial! Ël es mi héroe y una leyenda!

11 AMCU - Asleep at the Wheel ha lanzado álbumes que han sido innovadores y que son referencias en la Música Country: "A Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills", "Ride With Bob", "Live & Kickin'" y "Willie & The Wheel". ¿Tiene algo más en la manga?

Ray Benson - Como les dije, tengo un Nuevo cd como solista y otro cd tribute a Bob Wills está en el horno y suficientes ideas como para durar otros 40 años!!

12 AMCU - ¿Está planeando grabar un album similar con algún otro legendario artista?

Ray Benson - Hicimos uno con el cantante Leon Rausch, ex de la banda Texas Playboys.

13 AMCU - Recordamos un tributo a Bob Wills en los Grammy hace un par de años, en el cual usted tocó junto al legendario violinista Johnny Gimble y la nueva -en ese momento- superestrella Carrie Underwood. ¿Qué piensa usted de los nuevos, exitosos artistas como Underwood, Taylor Swift o Kelly Pickler que son masivamente pasadas en radios country pero que tienen poca conexión con la música de raíces? ¿Piensa que son el futuro de la Música Country o irá el género de nuevo a otra era de tradición?

Ray Benson - Yo creo que la música country, la corriente general de country, está alejándose de sus raíces en un esfuerzo para vender más cds!

14 AMCU - Recordamos su personaje de Ben Rayson en el film "Wild Texas Wind" con Dolly Parton. ¿Cómo sintió esa experiencia de actuación? ¿No le interesó seguir una carrera actoral? ¿Le gustaría intentarlo otra vez?

Ray Benson - Me encantó hacerlo y me gustaría hacerlo otra vez pero nuestro calendario me impide pasar el tiempo requerido para la actuación! La obra “A Ride With Bob” fue una gran experiencia actoral!

15 AMCU - Muchos líderes de banda han intentado carreras solistas. ¿Ha alguna vez considerado usted hacer algo solista?

Ray Benson - Bueno, sí, pero no todo el tiempo! Me encanta estar en una banda!

16 AMCU - Se le ha considerado un hombre de política. ¿Alguna vez ha mezclado usted música y política como lo han hecho artistas como Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels, Hank Jr. o las Dixie Chicks?

Ray Benson - Intento separar mi vision política de mi música! Parece que así no enojo a la mitad de mi público!

17 AMCU - ¿Alguna vez ha tocado en Sudamérica? Si así fue, ¿de qué manera son los públicos distintos?

Ray Benson - Tocamos en Brazil hace muchos años! Fue grandioso! Estuvimos tocando con algunos músicos maravillosos y fuimos muy bien recibidos!

18 AMCU - ¿Ha tenido alguna vez problemas con su altura?

Ray Benson - Ja, ja! Sólo encontrando camas en algunos países o golpeándome la cabeza en bares con techos bajos!

19 AMCU - Citando al clásico de George Jones: ¿quién se calzará sus zapatos?

Ray Benson - Hay muchos grandes cantantes y músicos country tocando en todo EL MUNDO! Es la radio country en Estados Unidos el problema! En Texas tenemos una cantidad de grandes cantantes y compositores que tienen éxito en nuestra área pero no los pasan en las radios a nivel nacional.

An Interview with Ray Benson

1 AMCU - Since Western Swing is a combination of Country Music and Jazz, how have jazz audiences received your music throughout the years?

Ray Benson - For the most part jazz audiences have ignored us. Now individuals who are open minded and who are jazz fans love us! It's the same 12 notes and the same rhythms and the soloing is right in the jazz improvisation tradition ! I call us Count Basie with a cowboy hat!

2 AMCU - Trends, fads and names come and go: Countrypolitan, Outlaws, Nashville Pop, Neotraditionalism, etc. However, Asleep at the Wheel has remained true to its music. Are there any plans to change in the future? Did you ever feel the need to change the group’s style to sell more records?

Ray Benson - No reason to change! Now I also have a solo record comin out which explores other kinds of music that I write but Asleep at the Wheel will always do what we do!

3 AMCU - Are there good new composers of Western Swing music nowadays? Why do you go back to cut old standards every now and then?

Ray Benson - Yes there are many good writers, including myself I hope, but part of AATW has always been to revive the old songs!

4 AMCU - What music do you usually listen to?

Ray Benson - I usually listen to new groups and singers who send me songs as well as groups who interest me. I surf you tube for great old and new stuff. I have 5000 78 rpm records that I dwelve into also!

5 AMCU - How many musicians has AATW had throughout the years? How do you recruit your band members?

Ray Benson - We have had around 100!! I always am on the lookout for talented players! When a spot opens up I just call around! We just hired a second fiddler and femalee vocalist for next years as our current female vocalist is leaving.

6 AMCU - Many of your band members have become significant protagonists in the band, e.g. Jason Roberts and Elizabeth McQueen. Did they ask you play a more important role or did you ask them to do so?

Ray Benson - I asked them.

7 AMCU - After having recorded two tribute albums with a lot of top names in Country Music, is there any other artist you would like to cut a duet with?

Ray Benson - Well we are working on a new Bob Wills tribute CD com in out late next year! I would LOVE to sing with Tony Bennet!!

8 AMCU - What did you feel the first time you met Bob Wills?

Ray Benson - Overwhelmed!

9 AMCU - Bob Wills has been a huge force in American music. However, many people don’t know much about him. Do you feel your music has helped make new Bob Wills fans?

Ray Benson - For sure! We have brought Western Swing and Bob Wills music to 3 or 4 generations of people thru our tribute CD’s and our play “A Ride With Bob”!

10 AMCU - Although you had already recorded with Willie Nelson, it took a long time before you came up with the impressive album “Willie & The Wheel”. What was it like to work with him?

Ray Benson - Workin with Willie is always great! He’s my hero and a legend!

11 AMCU - Asleep at the Wheel has released groundbreaking albums which are references in Country Music: “A Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills”, “Ride With Bob”, “Live’n’Kickin’” and “Willie & The Wheel”. Do you have anything else up your sleeve?

Ray Benson - As I said I have a solo CD another Bob Wills tribute CD in the works and enough ideas to last anotherr 40 years!!

12 AMCU - Are you planning to cut a similar album with any other legendary artist?

Ray Benson - We did one with ex Texas Playboys singer Leon Rausch.

13 AMCU - We remember a tribute to Bob Wills at the Grammys a couple of years ago, in which you performed with legendary fiddler Johnny Gimble and hot new –at that moment- superstar Carrie Underwood. What do you think about the new, successful artists like Underwood, Taylor Swift or Kellie Pickler who are massively played by country radio but who have very little connection with roots music? Do you think they are the future of Country Music or will the genre go back to another era of tradition?

Ray Benson - I think country music, mainstream country music, is moving further away from its roots in an effort to sell more CDs!

14 AMCU - We remember your Ben Rayson character in the film “Wild Texas Wind” with Dolly Parton. What was that acting experience like? Weren’t you interested in pursuing an acting career? Would you like to try again?

Ray Benson - I loved doin it and would do it again but our schedule prevents me from spending the time to pursue acting! The A Ride With Bob play was a great acting experience!

15 AMCU - Many band leaders have tried solo careers. Have you ever considered going solo?

Ray Benson - Well, yes but not full time! I love being in a band!

16 AMCU - You have been regarded as a political man. Have you ever mixed music and politics, the way artists like Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels, Hank Jr. or the Dixie Chicks have done?

Ray Benson - I try and separate my politics from my music! Seems that way I don't make half my audience mad!

17 AMCU - Have you ever played in South America? If so, how do audiences differ?

Ray Benson - We played in Brazil many years ago! It was great! jammed with some wonderful musicians and were well received!

18 AMCU - Have you ever had problems with your height?

Ray Benson - Haha! Just findin' beds in some countries or hitting my head in small bars with low ceilings!

19 AMCU - Quoting the George Jones classic: who’s gonna fill your shoes?

Ray Benson - There are many great country singers players and songwriters all over THE WORLD! Its American country RADIO that is the problem! In Texas we have a number of great singers, songwriters, etc., who do great in our area but get no national radio airplay.

First of all, we appreciate your time to answer our request, but most of all, we want to thank you for all the years of listening pleasure that you and your band has given to all of us who love Country Music.
